Department of Fish and Game Warden Assistance Volunteer Program

From June 14-25 the State Department of Fish and Game will conduct a Northern Enforcement District training in Redding for warden assistance volunteers. California's Game Warden force staff is critically thin. Add to that the reduced hours that have been imposed by tight State budgets and it is easy to see that a shortage has resulted. The snaggers, poachers and commercial abusers of our fish and wildlife resources are having a field day. DFG has a place for you if you fish, or hunt, or simply enjoy wildlife and can take the time for this training. .

This is the first of these schools to be offered to Enforcement volunteers. You pay your own expenses and there is no salary at this time. The purpose of the school will be to train people that wish to help the Department support its enforcement work. The jobs they will do would otherwise take time from that required of Wardens or might otherwise go undone. DFG Director John McCamman told us at our February meeting with him that other schools for volunteers are planned for later dates in different parts of the state.

You can learn about this school by contacting Lt. Cindy Adkins ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ), or by telephone at (530) 225-2268, Tuesday through Thursday. She will be out the week of May 17.

Applications for the training are due June 4, 2010. For additional information and an application go to the Department of Fish and Game Home Page, Education, Education and Outreach Volunteer Opertunities, Natural Resource Volunteer Program.

Napa Valley Fly Fishers Annual Dinner:  May 22, 2010

This month is Napa Valley Fly Fishers annual dinner. Usually in early April, it's late this year because we hosted the Fly Fishing Hall of Fame dinner at the end of March. I hope many of you will show your support of the good work our club does and arrange your schedule to come to our dinner. The date for the dinner is Saturday May 22 at 5:30 p.m. Special guest Congressman Mike Thompson is scheduled to appear during the first hour. Cost is $50 in advance, deadline Monday the 17th. If you wait that long though, send me a note that you are in so I can have the count for the caterer. You can purchase tickets at our website at http://www.napavalleyflyfishers.org/shop.html or send a check to Napa Valley Fly Fishers, P.O. Box 2373 Napa 94558.

June NCCFFF Board Meeting at McCumber Lake

Club presidents: You are all invited to join in our quarterly board meeting at Camp McCumber, near Shingletown and Lassen National Park, the weekend of June 4-6. This is a traditional event, as it kicks off the new NCC year (which runs from June 1-May 31). In addition to the board meeting, its a social and fishing event. The meeting site is at Lake McCumber, which has some good fishing, and not far from Manzanita lake in Lassen NP, which can be great fly fishing.

We stay in cabins at McCumber. People usually arrive Friday afternoon or evening and get some fishing in. The formal board meeting is held on Saturday, followed by evening fishing, and there is a great dinner Saturday night after everybody hauls in off the lake at dark. The event wraps up on Sunday, and many of us head to Manzanita to fish before heading home.

By attending the board meeting, you will be surprised at the scope of things with which the council is involved council. It gives you a chance to bring up your concerns about fisheries and other issues, and to meet a bunch of great folks dedicated to the sport of fly fishing and resource conservation in California and Nevada.
